MIKE McDOWALL

Broadcaster · Journalist · Podcast Producer

I turn complex ideas, expert knowledge and important stories into compelling audio.

I’m a broadcaster, journalist and podcast producer with more than two decades of experience in radio, journalism and digital media.

I have presented and produced programmes for BBC Radio 4, BBC 5 Live, LBC, CNN, Reuters and the Associated Press, and I've written for numerous publications including The Guardian and The Huffington Post.

I specialise in taking a subject that matters, finding the people who can illuminate it, and turning their knowledge and experience into clear, engaging and authoritative audio.

I'm available for audio and video production and consultancy, as well as media training and interview preparation.

What I do

Podcast Production
I can develop and produce a podcast from the initial idea to the finished programme — or join an existing production as an experienced editorial producer. This can include:

Concept and format development
Editorial research
Interview research and preparation
Interviewing and presenting
Scriptwriting and editorial development
Remote recording
Audio editing
Sound design and mixing
Series development and production
Documentary and narrative podcasts

Interviews & Audio Storytelling

Good audio begins with good conversations. I have extensive experience interviewing experts, decision-makers, authors, campaigners and people with extraordinary personal stories. I can conduct interviews, shape the editorial narrative and turn complex or specialist material into something an intelligent general audience can understand and enjoy.

Editorial Production

Sometimes you don't need another member of staff. You need someone experienced who can come into a project, understand what you're trying to achieve and make it happen. I can work as an external producer, editorial consultant or additional member of an existing communications or production team. I am particularly interested in working with organisations that need to communicate complex subjects to international or specialist audiences.

Experience

My career began in radio, where I worked as a presenter, producer and journalist. Since then I have worked across radio, television, print and digital media, producing everything from news and current affairs to documentary features and long-form interviews. My broadcast work has included: BBC Radio 4, BBC 5 Live, LBC, CNN, Reuters, and the Associated Press.

My writing has appeared in numerous publications including The Guardian, The Huffington Post, PBS and OZY.

If you are considering a podcast, developing an existing audio project, or simply need an experienced broadcaster and producer to help communicate a complex subject, I'd be happy to talk. I can work remotely with organisations anywhere in the world.

Building a podcast series

I created and produced Boat Radio, an independent international podcast and online radio operation serving the global sailing community. It began simply as a way to showcase my work but grew quickly to 13000 daily listeners in 105 countries downloading a substantial catalogue of original programmes and interviews. It taught me something that is just as important as knowing how to make a good individual programme: a successful podcast is an editorial proposition, not simply a piece of audio. It needs a clear audience, a strong reason to exist, compelling contributors and a format that can sustain itself over time. I can bring that experience to organisations looking to develop their own podcast or audio presence. In the 12 months that it existed, Boat Radio shows were downloaded 1.49 million times.

Why audio?

People are overwhelmed with information. Audio offers something different. A well-made interview or documentary can give an audience time to listen, think and connect with a subject in a way that a press release, social-media post or corporate video often cannot. For organisations with expertise to share and stories to tell, a podcast can become a powerful way of reaching an audience while also creating a library of authoritative, reusable content. That's where I come in.
